Common range hood problems we fix

A vent hood does three jobs: pull smoke, steam and grease away from the cooktop, light the cooking surface, and do it without sounding like a jet engine. When one of those stops, here's what we usually find.

Fan won't turn on

If the lights work but the fan doesn't, the fan motor, its run capacitor, the fan switch or the control board is the likely culprit. If nothing on the hood works, we start with power: the circuit, the wiring connection inside the hood and any internal fuse.

Fan runs but barely pulls smoke

Weak suction is often a grease-loaded filter or a blower wheel caked with grease. On ducted hoods, a backdraft damper stuck shut or a crushed or disconnected duct can choke the airflow. On recirculating hoods, a spent charcoal filter is the usual answer.

Loud, rattling or vibrating

Grease buildup throws a blower wheel out of balance, and worn motor bearings start to hum or grind. A loose mounting screw or a damper flapping in the duct can rattle at higher speeds.

Only one speed works

When the fan runs on high but not low, or the reverse, the speed switch, the capacitor or a relay on the control board has typically failed.

Lights out or flickering

Sometimes it's just a bulb. When a new bulb doesn't help, the socket, the light switch, a halogen transformer or an LED driver may have failed. Heat and grease are hard on all of them.

Buttons or touch controls not responding

Touch panels and push-button switches wear out, and grease can work its way behind them. We test whether it's the keypad, the board or the wiring between them.

Downdraft vent won't rise or retract

Pop-up downdraft vents behind a cooktop rely on a lift motor and limit switches. If the vent stalls partway or won't move, one of those is usually at fault.

What you can safely check before you call

  • The breaker. Many hoods share a circuit with other kitchen loads. Check for a tripped breaker before anything else.
  • The grease filters. With the fan off, pop out the metal filters and wash them in hot, soapy water. Clogged filters cause a lot of weak-suction calls.
  • The charcoal filter. If your hood recirculates instead of venting outside, the charcoal filter needs replacing on a schedule. Washing won't revive it.
  • The bulbs. Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before you swap them; hood bulbs get very hot.

Switch the breaker off before reaching past the filters, and never put your hand near the blower wheel with power on. Leave the wiring box and the motor housing to us.

Ducted vs recirculating, and why noise matters

A ducted hood pushes air through a duct to the outside, through the roof or an exterior wall. A recirculating hood filters the air through charcoal and blows it back into the kitchen. Ducted hoods remove heat and moisture as well as odor, but their performance depends on the duct, the damper and the cap outside. Recirculating hoods depend almost entirely on clean filters.

A hood that suddenly got louder is worth taking seriously. New noise usually means the blower wheel is out of balance or the motor bearings are going, and running it that way tends to finish the motor off. Catching it early often means a cleaning or a wheel instead of a full blower assembly.

Grease is the other long-term issue. It coats the blower, drips from seams and can collect in the duct. We clean what we can reach during the repair and let you know if the duct run needs attention.

What happens on the visit

The technician confirms the problem, removes the filters and covers, and tests the motor, capacitor, switches, controls and lighting circuit. You get a clear explanation and a quote before any work begins.

After you approve, we make the repair and run the hood on every speed with the lights on to confirm it works. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you the timeline before you approve. The $75 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair.

Cost, the $75 diagnostic and our warranty

$75 Diagnostic — Waived With Repair. The rest of the cost depends on the part, the access and the model. Swapping a light switch on an under-cabinet hood is quick. Replacing a blower in an island hood mounted high over a cooktop, or a lift motor in a downdraft, takes longer, and premium-brand parts cost more.

All repairs carry a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. We email an itemized invoice that you can pay online by card.

Range hoods and vent hoods we repair

We work on under-cabinet hoods, wall-mount chimney hoods, island hoods, insert and liner hoods built into custom cabinetry, and downdraft vents. Common brands include Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bosch, KitchenAid, JennAir, GE Profile, Monogram, Bertazzoni, Dacor and Miele.

In many Las Vegas homes, an over-the-range microwave does the hood's job, with its own vent fan and light. Those fall under our microwave repair service. If the burners under the hood are also giving you trouble, see our stove and oven repair page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does range hood repair cost in Las Vegas?

The diagnostic is $75, waived when you approve the repair. The final cost depends on the part, how hard it is to reach and the model, and you get a quote before any work is done.

How soon can you come out?

Most visits are booked within 1–2 business days. Call or request a visit online.

Why is my vent hood so loud all of a sudden?

Usually the blower wheel is caked with grease and out of balance, or the motor bearings are wearing out. It's worth having it checked before the motor fails completely.

Can you repair a recirculating hood, or only ducted ones?

Both. Recirculating hoods share the same motors, switches and lights as ducted hoods. Many weak-suction complaints on recirculating units are solved with a fresh charcoal filter.

Do you work on Wolf, Viking and Thermador hoods?

Yes. We repair hoods from Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bosch, KitchenAid, JennAir, Monogram and other major brands, including insert and island models.

What does your warranty cover?

Our repairs carry a 90-day warranty covering both parts and labor for the work performed.
