Common garbage disposal problems we fix
A disposal is a simple machine, which makes its failures fairly predictable. Where the trouble shows up, and what it sounds like, tells us a lot before the unit even comes off the sink.
Humming but not turning
A hum with no grinding means the motor is getting power but the flywheel is stuck. Bones, fruit pits, glass, or a utensil wedged between the impeller and the grind ring are the usual cause. Left running, a jammed motor overheats and trips its internal overload.
No sound at all
Silence when you flip the switch usually means the reset button has tripped, the wall switch has failed, a breaker or GFCI outlet has cut power, or the motor itself is done.
Leaking from the top
Water dripping from where the disposal meets the sink points to the sink flange. The plumber's putty or gasket has loosened, or the mounting ring has worked itself loose.
Leaking from the side
The side ports carry the dishwasher drain hose and the sink drain pipe. A loose clamp, a cracked hose end, or a worn gasket at the discharge elbow is the usual find, and these are generally fixable.
Leaking from the bottom
A drip from the base or the reset button area means an internal seal has failed and water is reaching the motor. That can't be repaired in any practical way, so the honest answer is a replacement unit.
Slow draining sink
Grease, starchy food, or coffee grounds can pack the drain line past the disposal. Dull grinding parts can also leave larger scraps that settle in the trap.
Grinding, rattling or bad smells
Metal on metal usually means something hard is inside, while a lingering smell comes from food trapped under the splash guard or in the grind chamber.

What you can safely check before you call
Before doing anything, turn the disposal off at the wall switch and, ideally, unplug it under the sink or switch off the breaker. Never put your hand inside the grind chamber, even with the power off. Use tongs to pull out anything you can see.
- Free a jam with the hex wrench. Most units have a hex socket in the center of the bottom. Insert the small wrench that came with the disposal, or a standard 1/4-inch hex key, and work it back and forth until it turns a full circle.
- Press the reset button. It's the small red or black button on the bottom. Give the motor a few minutes to cool first.
- Check the power. Look for a tripped breaker or a GFCI outlet under the sink that needs resetting.
- Find the leak. Dry the unit with a towel, run some water, and watch whether the drip starts at the top, side or bottom.
Don't pour chemical drain cleaner into a disposal. It can damage seals and is dangerous for anyone who works on the unit afterward.
Repair or replace: an honest answer
Jams, loose flanges, side-port leaks, failed switches and drain line clogs are usually worth fixing. A disposal that leaks from the bottom, or a motor that has burned out, is a different story; replacing the unit is almost always the better use of your money.
We handle both. If you need a new unit, we can remove the old one and install the replacement, including connecting the dishwasher drain and testing everything for leaks. We'll explain the options so you can pick what fits your kitchen and budget.

The dishwasher and air gap connection
Your dishwasher drains through the disposal, often by way of the air gap next to the faucet. When the disposal or its inlet clogs, dishwasher water backs up into the sink or spills out of the air gap.
A very common call we get follows a new disposal installation. The inlet that takes the dishwasher hose comes sealed with a knockout plug, and if nobody removed it, the dishwasher can't drain at all. We check that first on any new unit. If the dishwasher itself turns out to be the problem, see our dishwasher repair page.
What happens on the visit, cost and warranty
We check power, run the unit, trace any leak to its source and inspect the drain path, including the trap and air gap. You get a plain explanation and a quote before any work begins. If a part or replacement unit has to be ordered, we tell you the timeline before you approve.
$75 Diagnostic — Waived With Repair. The $75 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. What drives the rest of the cost is the part or unit involved, how much room there is under the sink, and how the plumbing is laid out.
Repairs and installations we perform carry a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. You get an itemized invoice by email and pay online by card.

Brands we repair and install
We service InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen, Kohler and other common models, from basic continuous-feed units to quieter, higher-horsepower ones. In Las Vegas homes, hard-water scale around the sink flange and mineral buildup in the drain line are worth checking on any older unit.
