Common dryer problems we fix
A dryer has fewer moving parts than a washer, but the ones it has work hot and run long. Here is what usually goes wrong and where we look first.
Tumbles but no heat
On a gas dryer, the usual causes are a weak igniter, failed gas valve coils or a bad flame sensor. On an electric dryer, it's most often a burned-out heating element or a blown thermal fuse. Either type can also lose heat from a failed cycling thermostat or high-limit thermostat.
Takes two or three cycles to dry
Long dry times are very often an airflow problem, not a heat problem. A lint-packed vent or a crushed transition hose behind the dryer traps hot, wet air in the drum. Weak heat from a failing gas valve coil can cause the same complaint, so we test both.
Won't start at all
A blown thermal fuse is a common reason an electric dryer goes completely dead, and on many models it kills the motor circuit too. A bad door switch, start switch or broken belt switch can also keep the drum from turning.
Drum won't turn
If the motor hums but the drum sits still, the belt has probably snapped or slipped off. A seized idler pulley or a motor that has failed can produce the same symptom.
Squealing, thumping or scraping
Squeals usually come from worn drum rollers or an idler pulley. Thumping can mean flat spots on the rollers, and scraping often points to worn drum glides or a felt seal that has come loose.
Shuts off mid-cycle or runs very hot
Dryers that overheat trip their safety devices and stop. The root cause is almost always restricted exhaust, which is why we check the vent before replacing a fuse.

What you can safely check before you call
Some dryer problems have simple causes you can rule out yourself. Unplug the dryer first, and on a gas model, turn the gas shutoff valve behind it to off before moving the machine.
- Lint screen: Clean it and look into the slot for packed lint.
- Breakers: An electric dryer uses a double breaker. If only one side trips, the drum may spin with no heat.
- Transition hose: Look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked foil hose.
- Exterior vent hood: With the dryer running, go outside and feel for strong airflow at the hood.
If you smell gas, don't touch switches or try to relight anything. Leave the house and call your gas company from outside. And please don't jump out a blown thermal fuse to get the dryer running again, because that fuse is what stops an overheating dryer.
Gas and electric dryers: how the heat fails
A gas dryer heats with a burner. The igniter glows until it's hot enough, the flame sensor confirms it, and the gas valve coils open the valve. When an igniter glows but no flame appears, worn valve coils are a common reason. When the igniter doesn't glow at all, we test the igniter, the flame sensor and the fuses ahead of them.
An electric dryer heats with a coiled element in a metal housing. Elements break, sometimes after years of restricted airflow, and they can short against the housing. We test the element, the thermal fuse and the thermostats so you aren't paying for parts that weren't the problem.

What happens on the visit
We start with what you've noticed, then run the dryer and measure what's actually happening, from heat output to airflow at the back of the machine. Once we find the failed part, we explain it and give you a quote before touching anything.
You approve the work, or you don't. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you the timeline before you approve. After the repair, we run a heat cycle, confirm the dryer cycles on and off normally, and check that air is moving freely through the exhaust.
The repair is covered by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Your itemized invoice is emailed to you and can be paid online by card.

Dryer repair cost and the $75 diagnostic
$75 Diagnostic — Waived With Repair. The $75 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. Beyond that, the price comes down to three things: which part failed, how hard it is to reach, and your model. A thermal fuse is a small job, while replacing drum rollers or a motor means taking the drum out.
Dryers stacked over a washer or squeezed into a closet take more time to pull out and open. Whatever the case, the number is in front of you before we start.

Lint, dust and long vent runs in Las Vegas
Desert dust mixes with lint and settles inside dryer vents, and many homes here have long runs out to a side wall or up through the roof. Restricted exhaust makes a dryer run hot and slow, wears out heating parts early and raises fire risk. What we usually find behind a dryer that keeps blowing fuses is a vent that hasn't been cleaned in a long time.
If your dryer runs slow even after a repair, the vent needs attention. Our dryer vent cleaning service clears the duct, the transition hose and the exterior hood. Questions about other appliances? Reach our Las Vegas appliance repair team any time we're open.

Which dryer brands do you work on?
We repair most major brands, including Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux and Speed Queen.
