Common microwave problems we fix
Microwaves fail in a handful of familiar ways. The symptom usually tells us which circuit to test first, which keeps the diagnosis quick.
Runs but doesn't heat
The light is on, the turntable spins and the timer counts down, but food stays cold. This usually points to a failed magnetron, a shorted high-voltage diode, a bad capacitor or a blown high-voltage fuse.
Completely dead
No display and no response often comes down to a blown main fuse. That fuse frequently blows because one of the door switches has failed, so we test the switches rather than just swapping the fuse.
Sparking or arcing inside
Sparks inside an empty cavity are often caused by a burned or grease-soaked waveguide cover, the small panel on the inside wall. Chipped interior paint or a damaged turntable support can also arc. Stop using the microwave until it's checked.
Turntable won't spin
A worn turntable motor, a cracked coupler, or a dirty roller ring are the usual causes.
Keypad not responding
Some buttons stop working, or the unit beeps on its own. The touchpad membrane or control board has usually failed.
Door problems
A door that won't latch, or a microwave that only starts when you push on the door, has worn latch hooks or door switches.
Over-the-range fan or light out
On an over-the-range microwave, the vent fan and cooktop light are part of the job. A fan that's noisy or dead, or lights that won't come on, usually trace back to the fan motor, a bulb socket or the control board.

Safety first: what you can check yourself
Never open the microwave's outer cabinet. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even after the unit is unplugged. Leave internal testing to a technician.
A few outside checks are safe:
- Check the breaker, and for countertop units, try a different outlet.
- Make sure the door closes fully with nothing caught in the seal area.
- Clean food and grease off the waveguide cover with a damp cloth, then let it dry before use.
- Reseat the turntable on its roller ring and coupler.
- On over-the-range models, clean or swap the grease filters if the fan sounds strained.
If you smell burning or see scorch marks, unplug the unit or switch off its breaker and stop using it.
What happens on the visit
We start by confirming the symptom, then safely discharge the high-voltage circuit and test the parts that match it. For an over-the-range microwave, we can often diagnose it in place, and we take it down from the wall bracket only when needed.
You get a clear explanation and a quote before any repair starts. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you the timeline before you approve. After the repair, we run a heating test and check the door, fan and light.

Cost, the $75 diagnostic and an honest recommendation
$75 Diagnostic — Waived With Repair. The $75 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. Beyond that, cost depends on the part, how hard the microwave is to reach, and the model. Built-in and drawer units, and over-the-range models that need to come off the wall, take more labor than a countertop unit.
An inexpensive countertop microwave is often better replaced than repaired, and we'll tell you if that's the case. Built-in, drawer, over-the-range and trim-kit installations are usually worth fixing, because replacing them means matching cutouts and mounting hardware.
Repairs carry a 90-day warranty covering parts and labor. You receive an itemized invoice by email and can pay online by card.
Over-the-range microwaves: the vent side of the job
An over-the-range microwave does two jobs. Besides heating food, it pulls steam, smoke and grease up from the cooktop below, either venting it outside through a duct or filtering it and blowing it back into the kitchen.
That second job takes a toll. Grease builds up on the filters and fan blades, heat rises into the bottom of the cabinet every time the burners are on, and the cooktop lights burn out. A fan that runs on its own is often a built-in heat sensor doing its job, switching the fan on to protect the electronics when the cooktop gets hot.
When we service one of these units, we check both sides. That means the cooking circuit, plus the fan motor, damper, filters and lights, so you aren't calling back a month later for the half we didn't look at. We also confirm the unit is secure on its wall bracket before we leave.
In Las Vegas kitchens, where many homes have a gas range under the microwave, keeping the grease filters clean goes a long way toward keeping the fan healthy.

Microwave types and brands we repair
We work on every type of microwave:
- Over-the-range units that also serve as the cooktop vent
- Built-in and wall-oven combination microwaves
- Drawer microwaves installed under the counter or in an island
- Countertop models, including convection units
Common brands we see include Sharp, Panasonic, GE, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Wolf, Thermador and Viking.
If your kitchen uses a separate vent hood instead of an over-the-range microwave, see our range hood repair page. If the oven or burners below are acting up too, our stove and oven repair page covers that, or you can reach our Las Vegas appliance repair team by phone.

Frequently asked questions
How much does microwave repair cost in Las Vegas?
The $75 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. The final cost depends on the part, the type of microwave and how it's installed, and you get a quote before any work begins.
Is it worth repairing my microwave?
Over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves are usually worth repairing. An inexpensive countertop unit often isn't, and we'll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
Why is my microwave sparking?
The most common cause is a dirty or burned waveguide cover inside the cavity, though chipped paint and metal objects can cause it too. Stop using it and have it checked, and never open the outer cabinet yourself.
