Signs your dryer vent is clogged
A dryer vent rarely clogs all at once. Lint builds up a little with every load until the dryer starts showing it. These are the signs worth paying attention to.
Loads take longer and longer
If one cycle used to do the job and now it takes two, restricted airflow is the most likely reason. The dryer is still making heat, but the moist air has nowhere to go.
The laundry room gets hot
A dryer that is hot to the touch, or a laundry room or garage that heats up noticeably during a cycle, points to exhaust backing up inside the cabinet.
A burning smell
Lint that collects near the heat source can scorch. If you smell burning, stop the dryer, unplug it and don't run it again until the vent and cabinet are checked.
Weak airflow or lint at the exterior hood
With the dryer running, you should feel strong air at the outside vent. Little or no airflow, a flap that stays shut, or lint piled around the hood all mean the line is restricted.
The thermal fuse keeps blowing
When a dryer overheats, a thermal fuse cuts power to protect it. A fuse that blows more than once is almost always a vent problem, and replacing the fuse alone won't fix it.

Why a clogged vent is a fire risk
Lint is fine, dry and burns easily. When the vent is restricted, the dryer runs hotter and longer, and lint gathers in the very places that heat reaches: the duct, the blower housing and the space around the burner or element. That combination is what makes dryer vents a real fire concern rather than just an efficiency issue.
A clean vent also helps the dryer itself. Restricted exhaust wears out heating elements, igniters, thermostats and fuses early. Many of the calls we get for dryer repair trace back to a vent that needed attention first.
What you can check yourself
- Clean the lint screen every load, and wash it with warm, soapy water now and then if dryer sheets leave a film.
- Look behind the dryer. Unplug it first, and on a gas dryer close the gas valve before pulling it out. A foil hose that is crushed, kinked or full of lint should be replaced.
- Check the exterior hood for lint, bird nests or a stuck flap. Only reach what you can safely reach from the ground.
Please don't climb onto a roof to clear a vent, and don't use a leaf blower to force lint through a long run, which can push it deeper or blow apart a joint inside the wall.

What our dryer vent cleaning includes
We clean the whole exhaust path, not just the part you can see. A typical visit includes:
- Inside the dryer cabinet: clearing lint from the lint screen housing, the blower area and around the heat source, where lint tends to hide.
- The transition hose: cleaning or replacing the flexible connection between the dryer and the wall.
- The duct run: brushing and vacuuming the duct through the wall, floor or ceiling.
- The exterior hood: clearing the termination and checking that the flap opens and closes freely.
- Airflow check: running the dryer afterward to confirm air moves freely at the exterior vent.
In two-story homes, the vent often runs up and out through the roof, and we handle that termination too. You get a quote before we begin, based on the length and layout of the run and how the vent ends. If the dryer also needs a repair, the $75 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair, and repairs carry a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

Long vent runs, condos and multifamily buildings
Dust and lint are a constant in Las Vegas, and many homes and buildings here have long vent runs. Condos, townhomes and stacked units in multistory buildings often vent through a ceiling or a shared chase, where lint settles in every horizontal section and bend. A stacked dryer in a closet is especially hard to keep an eye on, which our stackable washer and dryer repair page covers in more detail.
For property managers and HOAs, we can clean vents across multiple units and send itemized invoices by email for online card payment. Work orders are welcome at info@lasvegaslaundry.repair. If your building has a shared laundry room, see our apartment laundry room repair service as well.

How often to clean a dryer vent
Plan on cleaning the dryer vent at least once a year, more for heavy use. Large households, families running several loads a day, long or roof-mounted vent runs, and shared laundry rooms all fill a vent faster. If you notice any of the signs above between cleanings, don't wait for the calendar.
A cleaning is also a good time to look at the parts of the vent that wear out. Foil and vinyl transition hoses sag and tear over time, exterior flaps crack in the sun, and joints inside a long run can separate. We point out anything we see and explain your options before replacing a thing. Questions about other appliances can go to our Las Vegas appliance repair team.
